Lithophanes
A lithophane is a photograph turned into relief. The print is thick where the picture is dark and thin where it is light, so light coming through it rebuilds the image — in daylight a pale panel on the shelf, lit from behind the photograph itself. Pictures with a clear subject and real contrast come out best: a face, a dog, a building against the sky.
